Human Requiem
This piece was created for the Symohony Hall in Boston, MA, as part of an assignment and contest among the Juniors of MassArt. It was based off of the classical music piece “German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms. I was inspired by the way the music flowed together and emitted a feeling of missing someone you love, but, in my opinion, a bit of a bittersweet joy of having been able to know them. I wanted to channel this somber feeling in a way that many might not think of: through the eyes of a child. The piece was made for Brahms’ late mother after her passing and I wanted to show how it would maybe be explained to a child that their mother is up in heaven and how a kid will see this as something that really hurts them but at the same time, hoping their mom is somewhere happy. I think this conflict can be shown in the childish looks of the characters but their faces are distorted in pain or a tearful smile, while the angel has a content expression but is untouchable to them, glowing and peaceful, looking how a person might in a coffin at a funeral. Their poses are supposed to mirror the way people gather around during a wake and burial, holding each other in comfort, but in a way that also shows a celebration for being able to have known the angel.
