The  Single Diary of a Precarious Kacee GardnerThu Jul 19 2022
I was hired to do the spot illustrations and cover for the young adult novel, “The Single Diary of a Precarious Kacee Gardner”. The story is in the perspective of a high schooler named Daniel going through the motions of being a typical highschooler and falling in love. The illsutrations are made to mimic graphite “doodles” made by the secondary main, Kacee, so I tried to emmulate that feeling by leaving in smudges and the texture when they were added in. For the cover, the client wanted the letters to seem as if they were falling out of a bit of an abstract watercolor sky, so I added linework to give the impression of falling and used a variation of blues with a watercolor brush to create the background idea he wanted.

These are some of the concepts, alternate colors, and rejected versions of the cover. As you can see, we went through a bunch of iterations before finally landing on the final version.
