Coral Mother
    This piece depicts many reef fish as mermaids caring for a large coral “mother”, covered in small blooming coral babies being brought by human divers. This was inspired by articles on coral IVF being done to help bring life back to coral reefs.  A lot of coral reefs are dying from pollution and coral eggs often don’t have very high survival rates on their own but, with human intervention to help grow the infant coral until it is big enough to survive a bit better on its own. I wanted to show this in a very whimsical way so I used mermaids inspired by reef fish that live and keep the coral reefs healthy and lively. Coral, despite its appearance, is actually an animal not a plant, so I gave them humanization as well to help depict that instead of leaning towards the idea of it being like farming.
